CNC: Making Your Manufacturing Facility Work For You

5 Factors That Affect Your Welding Estimate

by Pamela Hill

Planning a welding project? Wondering what it's going to cost? When you call a welding services company, they will give you a quote for your project, but to ensure the quote is as accurate as possible, you should try to gather the following information:

1. Type of Metal

Different types of metal have different costs. They also have different physical properties that affect their workability. To get an accurate quote, you should decide which type of metal you want to use.

If you're not sure, ask the welder. They'll be able to tell you about the pros and cons of different types of metal, and they may even be able to show you samples of different types of metal.

2. Design

If you have your own design, the cost of the metal services will vary based on the intricacy of the design. The more details the design has, the more you should expect to pay. However, if the welding company is doing the design, you should expect to pay more for their design services.

3. Painting, Coating, and Other Finishing

Metalwork doesn't just have to be plain metal. You can add paint, protective coatings, and other finishes to your final project. Of course, they also affect the cost. The materials and labor will affect the cost, but so too will the location of the work.

Some metal fabricators do the finishing in-house, while others need to outsource this work. When talking to different companies, ask how they handle finishing and how it affects the total cost.

4. Size and Quantity

Size and quantity also affect your estimate. In some cases, large metal designs are more expensive simply because they require more metal. However, small designs can also be expensive because they require a lot of detailed work.

Do you just want a single item? Or do you want multiple metal objects? The quantity that you need will also affect the final cost. While you should expect to pay more for multiple items, you may also get a discount for ordering in bulk.

5. Timing

When getting estimates for your metal welding project, make sure that you talk about timing. If someone has a low bid but it's going to take months, you may want to spend more money to get the finished welded product a bit faster. If you have a set timeline, you should talk with the welding company about it to ensure that they factor timeliness into your quote.
